Explorer_Pheonix   [Apr 09, 2007 at 08:17 AM]
Just a guess - but maybe an old bomb shelter?
Explorer_Marquis   [Apr 26, 2007 at 04:11 PM]
...unfinished St James tunnels?!
Wizard   [Apr 26, 2007 at 07:38 PM]
Not unfinished. Infact they were finished twice. Once as a train tunnel, and then as a bomb shelter for World war II . Nowdays their only use seems to be for emergency services training.

insane! any way of getting down there Wink
Explorer_Marquis   [May 31, 2007 at 11:33 AM]
So what's with the two niches at the end of the tunnel? How did you find this place, anyway?
Wizard   [May 31, 2007 at 11:55 AM]
The end wall is a baffle. The recessed sections form part of a short corridor that winds through the baffle and in to the next section of the tunnel. It seems as if the intention was to divide the shelters vertically to allow for more occupants, consequently the corridors are repeated in the top section.
Explorer_expert   [Jun 28, 2007 at 05:46 PM]
if anyone explores the bomb shelters, they'll eventually find a large gong object. I want it bad
Explorer_9901   [Jul 24, 2007 at 04:44 PM]
the big ben gong is nearby right?
Wizard   [Jul 24, 2007 at 05:15 PM]
Everyone loves the gong eh? - yes, the gong is very close by. in fact from memory it's in the shelter next door.
Explorer_expert   [Jul 25, 2007 at 07:52 AM]
damn straight! Gong 4 life!!! It just looks so beautiful. So serene. So tranquil. The very essence of existence encased in wraught iron and steel...er i mean, yes. It is good. Rolling Eyes
Explorer_gorman   [Aug 06, 2007 at 11:48 AM]
The only way to get here is to walk down the tracks at St James, right? I'd love to go but I can't afford that $5000 fine Razz
Wizard   [Nov 13, 2007 at 03:53 AM]
Due to popular request. The gong!: http://urbantwilight.net/displayimage.php?pos=-933
Explorer_Mosher   [Jan 23, 2008 at 05:45 PM]
how do u get in there?
trainman   [Apr 07, 2008 at 04:34 PM]
You can't. Not even down a live tunnel. It is behind a locked door or a locked gate.
Explorer_sydney guy   [Nov 19, 2008 at 12:14 AM]
this is part of the disused train tunnels under hide park isnt it but this bit was turned into a bomb shelter i think i read its still sydneys official bomb shelter

Watch a movie called 'The Tunnel" Its about this station and its unused sections.
Explorer_Keen   [Jun 25, 2011 at 01:17 PM]
Four reporters went down to film, two returned alive, one died, one vanished.
Explorer_Dude   [Sep 08, 2011 at 08:21 PM]

Wizard   [Sep 08, 2011 at 08:41 PM]

Explorer_bubbles   [Jan 09, 2012 at 03:36 AM]
the movie is quite interesting to see the supernatural side of it... but the history of the tunnel is amazing i my self would like to stand in st james station but like hell i would ever go in Exclamation
Explorer_ripples   [Mar 09, 2012 at 01:03 PM]
rumour has it there was a staircase leading from Shakespeare Place (sth end of Botanic) to below. Fire apparently destroyed stairs in '68. Currently where the Cahill Expwy enters the domain tunnel.
Explorer_may   [Mar 19, 2012 at 01:11 AM]
"rumour" ripples? dont you mean wikipedia? lol.. i would kill to go exploring through all these tunnels, but after going through every pic in this album and reading all the comments, im thinking i was born a decade or 2 too late Sad goddammit..
Explorer_edison   [Jul 27, 2012 at 10:46 PM]
the tunnels in the pic are not "disused"; they were never used in the first place. They curve towards the south-east, and climb to pass over the City Outer tunnel near Park Street, heading towards the alignment of Oxford St and Taylor Sq., eventually in Bradfield's plan to go to Bondi Jun.
Wizard   [Sep 23, 2012 at 04:33 AM]
10,000 views for this un-colour-corrected, lacking in scale, point and shoot shot of a hole in the ground. What are you guys even doing here??
Kniaz   [Sep 23, 2012 at 08:49 PM]
You'd be surprised how many people have a fetish for this sort of thing. In other news, I need more tissues.
Wizard   [Nov 09, 2012 at 04:47 AM]
Glad we could pleasure you Kniaz.

UrbanTwilight...
UrbanTwilight is photographing the underground tunnels, abandoned buildings, rooftops, and hidden industry that most people would never normally get to see. The images contained on this site have been shot in Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne, Canberra, Hobart, and countless country locations inbetween. Nearly all have been taken in low to very-low lighting conditions, and most on Canon digital equipment.

The Julia Farr Home for Incurables

After sitting vacant for more than 30 years, the Julia Farr Hospital's 'Home for Incurables' has finally been demolished. Urbantwilight hid a camera on the roof of a neighbouring bulding and filmed the 4 week demolition process. Checkout the timelapse video.

14/02/13
UrbanTwilight turns 10 this year so I've finally made some time between the tunnels and abandoned buildings (and my day job) to make a few improvements around the place. The images are bigger, the old ones have been colour corrected, and a handful have been given the flick. Most importantly there's a whole new section called 'Archives' - You should check it out from time to time, you never know what you might find.

The Funnel

An expedition report of sorts, this has been hiding on Urbantwilight for years. 'The Funnel', 'The Pothole', 'Skate or die'. Whatever you choose to call it, this place is awe-inspiring.
