The cave clan call this lovely place "Hobart Darkie". The junkies that inhabit it probably know it as "home". It's a dangerous place on occasion, but one that's well worth the visit.
Lots of other utilities intersect with this drain so i expect it sees quite a few maintenance workers. Tours were once conducted through here as well i believe.
so do you start running when you see a light coming ur way?

I'm an amature photographer wanting to explore my local area's undocumented history (Gippsland Vic, lots of goldmines in the area I hunt). You're photo is near on perfect. One thing I note is the sunlight coming in at the side and the roof that appears to be corregated iron. Whats it look like on the outside above it? Is it safe and visible/blocked off for people walking around or is it hidden under concrete etc?
The majority of this tunnel is covered in buildings. I'm not sure what exactly is above this section, but that definately is sunlight sneaking in through the cracks. Imagine an open canal, then cover it with iron, then cement, then later you erect a building or lay a road over it. Layer apon layer it's eventually burried, hidden from view, and finally forgotten by the population that it so faithfully serves.

I love how people don't think about things like this. They just pay the bills and complain if the service fails. Another question, have you ever taken or thought about taking a four gas detector? I'm trying to obtain one cheaply because the gold mines are a high risk area being confined space entrys, even some of the areas you go could be at risk. (four gas detector gives levels of Oxygen "O2", Carbon Monoxide "CO", Hydrogen Sulfide "H2S" and Flamable Gases "LEL"). Stay safe mate.

UrbanTwilight...
UrbanTwilight is photographing the underground tunnels, abandoned buildings, rooftops, and hidden industry that most people would never normally get to see. The images contained on this site have been shot in Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne, Canberra, Hobart, and countless country locations inbetween. Nearly all have been taken in low to very-low lighting conditions, and most on Canon digital equipment.
The Julia Farr Home for Incurables
After sitting vacant for more than 30 years, the Julia Farr Hospital's 'Home for Incurables' has finally been demolished.
Urbantwilight hid a camera on the roof of a neighbouring bulding and filmed the 4 week demolition process. Checkout the timelapse video.

UrbanTwilight turns 10 this year so I've finally made some time between the tunnels and abandoned buildings (and my day job) to make a few improvements around the place.
The images are bigger, the old ones have been colour corrected, and a handful have been given the flick. Most importantly there's a whole new section called 'Archives' -
You should check it out from time to time, you never know what you might find.
The Funnel
An expedition report of sorts, this has been hiding on Urbantwilight for years. 'The Funnel', 'The Pothole', 'Skate or die'. Whatever you choose to call it, this place is awe-inspiring.
