the old tunnel used to shoot the train out right across the valley on a viaduct, which would then connect with the mainline again, was closed when sar switched to narrow gauge for the freights. stories have surfaced over time suggesting both these tunnels are haunted, due to the number of deaths during their construction, and deaths that had occurred in the nearby quartz mines

i've ridden through and walked the length of this tunnel. it was pretty sketchy considering we did it without lights or torches. the tunnel to the left of this along the walking trail is actually fenced and steel plated, thats actually part of the mushroom farms now and they just have racks and racks of mushrooms

This tunnel is on the Belair Line (also known as the "south main line" connecting adelaide to melb.), known as Sleeps Hill Tunnel. It was built in 1919. The track on the left of the picture is standard gauge (1435mm), this line is the one that is knowned by ARTC and goes to melb. The track on the right is broad gauge (1600mm) and terminates at Belair station in the adelaide hills. It is known by the SA govts metro rail system (formerly called TransAdelaide 1994-2010, now called Rail Commissioner (2011).
